People-centred transition for Maritime Decarbonisation in the East Mediterranean

In a nutshel

Through a series of awareness-raising and educational activities, this project highlights Naxos island’s rich water-related cultural heritage —both tangible and intangible— while showcasing sustainable water management practices that have been or could still be applied in response to water scarcity, intensified by climate change and mass tourism.

Activities

This project runs throughout 2026 and includes:

  • Documentation of water monuments across the island, from antiquity to the present day, including fountains, wells, cisterns, irrigation systems, and intangible heritage such as water-related customs and oral traditions!
  • Documentation of modern water-saving practices found on the island, such as rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling
  • Production of a printed illustrated map featuring selected monuments, for use in guided tours and local schools, ans a dedicated digital section on the HYDRIA platform,
  • A list of educational activities for teachers, drawing on the “Water Monuments” theme
  • Educational sessions in selected local schools, building on MIO-ECSDE/MEdIES’s existing programme “The Gift of Rain / Water in the City”
  • An online campaign inviting students, families, and the wider public to photograph and share water monuments around the island.
  • A public closing event featuring expert presentations, educational materials showcase, and a guided tour of selected monuments.

The partnership

The project is being implemented by MIO-ECSDE/ MEdIES in collaboration with MONUMENTA and GWP-Med, with the kind support of Janji clothing company.
