COP29 – Greening education in the spotlight
The Greening Education Partnership (led by UNESCO) joined with the COP29 Presidency for the organization of the first ever Human Development Day on 18 November during the COP29. The outcome of this was the adoption of the Baku Guiding Principles on Human Development for Climate Resilience as well as a Joint Statement , featuring 2 key messages:
- The need to invest in quality, holistic climate change education, to empower learners with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to create sustainable solutions. Engaging the minds, hearts and hands of every learner is essential to make them climate-ready – and it all begins with greening education.
- The need to build climate-resilient, low-carbon education systems. Learning environments need to be adapted to better cope with climate shocks, and learners suffering from displacement and school closures need to be able to continue their learning.

The Partnership will be taking these messages forward in 2025 advocating for greater investment towards greening education, and will be presented in the last for this year, UNESCO-UNFCCC Webinar on 3 December 14.00-15.00 (CET) ” What’s next for greening teacher training and education systems’ capacities?” (register: https://unesco-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ExdwgZAjS_qzhP1npOqnzA#/registration)

Following the success of the 1st webinar series (on greening education policies & curriculum) on the road to COP27 and the 2nd series (on greening schools)on the road to COP28, UNESCO and UNFCCC are launching a third series of six conversations on climate change education for social transformation, from May to December 2024. The series focuses on greening teacher training and education systems’ capacities on the road to COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The conversations will delve into the challenges at all levels of education, including early childhood, primary, secondary, and tertiary, from the diverse perspectives of teachers, educators, young people, and policymakers as well as explore concrete solutions to greening teacher training and education systems’ capacities in order to deliver quality climate change education. The webinars feed into the ACE Hub, an initiative launched by UNFCCC and the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2022 to foster education and public awareness, training, public access to information and participation in climate action.
The webinars are conducted in English with live interpretation in French and Spanish.
