With some 2 billion players around the world, video games have become one of the most powerful entertainment mediums on the planet. Now the UN is hoping to engage this huge community on the issue of climate change.
More than 30 different studios from across the gaming industry have come together to create innovative and inspiring “green activations” for their games. These are new features of messaging introduced by companies to highlight environmental themes such as conservation and restoration. Called the Green Game Jam, the competition is part of the Playing for the Planet Alliance, facilitated by the UN and intended to bring climate issues to the gaming sphere.
The Playing for the Planet Alliance is a group of private video game sector member organizations who have made voluntary, ambitious, specific, and time-based commitments for people and planet. Some of the biggest names in the video games industry have formally committed to harnessing the power of their platforms to take action in response to the climate crisis. Combined, these commitments from 21 companies will result in a 30 million tonne reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030, millions of trees planted, new “green nudges” in game design, and improvements to energy management, packaging, and device recycling.
