The Republic of Cyprus hosts the 9th Environment for Europe (EfE) Ministerial Conference, from 5 to 7 October 2022 in Nicosia, Cyprus. The Conference is organized by the Republic of Cyprus with the support of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), which provides the secretariat for the Environment for Europe process. The Conference focuses on three main themes: Sustainable Infrastructure, Sustainable Tourism and Education for Sustainable Development.

High-level delegations from more than 70 countries will attend, including countries of the UNECE and the Mediterranean Region, the Middle East and Asia. Around 1000 participants from the public and private sectors, academia, youth and and civil society organisations are expected.

MIO-ECSDE & MEdIES have a significant role in the conference through:

  • Facilitating the Mediterranean Committee on ESD in the organization of the High-Level Mediterranean Event (6 October), where Ministers of Education and Environment from the region and important international organizations will celebrate the progress of the Mediterranean Strategy of ESD, and set the way forward for its ESD Action Plan towards 2030.
  • Participating in the Secretariat support of the Side Events: Some 40 side events are expected to be organised within the two and a half Conference days.
  • Organising the 2022 Hybrid University, back-to-back and organically linked with the Conference. After the Conference is over a selected number of participants will be invited to engage in the Hybrid University activities including field visits, workshops and lectures. The Hybrid University focuses on “Biosphere Reserves as sites to develop Ocean Literacy” and is coorganised with the Unit for Education for the Environment and Sustainable Development of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute/Ministry of Education and the UNESCO Venice Office.
