As part of the Be2aty project, MEdIES/MIO-ECSDE organized a coastal clean-up event in Athens, Greece, to celebrate World Clean-Up Day 2025. Approximately fifty 15-year-old students and their teachers from the First High School of Athens took part in the activity, which blended science-based learning with practical environmental action.

The initiative built on the success of the previous year’s clean-up and aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of marine litter issues through a citizen-science approach. Prior to the clean-up, a preparatory workshop was held at the school to familiriase students with beach-litter monitoring methods and the importance of reliable data collection.

Over 120 kg of waste were collected in the cleanup, which was held in the industrial area of Aspropyrgos in Athens. The most common items were various types of plastic, construction-related debris, and sanitary waste.

In order to help students upload their collected data (waste types, quantities, etc.) to the Marine Litter Watch, a citizen-based tool that supports the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, a follow-up workshop will be held with the students in the coming weeks.

Within Be2aty joined clean-ups are scheduled to take place in Athens and Dashur (Egypt), engaging youth, students and families.  Stay tuned for the Egypt-based events !
