In total 174 teachers of primary and secondary level attended the two seminars held on 28 and 29 January 2014 in Nicosia and Lemesos city in Cyprus, in collaboration with the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus, in the framework of the Mission Water Programme on Non Conventional Water Resources in Cyprus.

The seminar served as a basic training for primary and secondary level teachers of Cyprus on the non conventional water resources and gave them ideas on how to use the newly produced material “ To allo Nero” ¬†(“Alter Aqua”) in class. It offered the participants clarifications on the methods applied, and pedagogical tips on activities, “correct answers” to worksheets, pedagogic bibliography, etc.

The thematic focus of the educational material “To allo Nero” covers Non Conventional Water Resouces (NCWRs), amongst them rainwater harvesting, greywater & treated waste water recycling options as well as desalination. The material has been authored by MEdIES Secretariat in collaboration with the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus, so as to meet the needs of the Cypriot Educational Community.

The two trainings were organised by the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus, in collaboration with MEdIES and the Global Water Partnership Mediterranean (GWP-Med) :

  • On 28/01 the training held in Nicosia was attended by 105 participants
  • On 29/01 the training held in Lemesos was attended by 69 participants, respectively.

The participants welcomed the educational material and showed high interest in it, as well as in the accompanying hands-on material (magnetic board, floor mats etc). Each participant received a hardcopy of the Educational Material on Non Conventional Water Resources, “To allo Nero”, as well as an e-copy.

Mission Water is a programme on Non Conventional Water Resources (NCWR) in Cyprus. The Cypriot initiative constitutes the expansion of the Programme previously held in the Greek and the Maltese islands. The program in Cyprus was initiated in 2013 by the Global Water Partnership Mediterranean (GWP-Med), aiming to mobilise NCWRs on the Island, as a sustainable solution for water availability in view of increasing water scarcity, escalating demand and climate change. It is a multi-stakeholder programme bringing together the Global Water Partnership Mediterranean (GWP-Med), the Coca-Cola system in Cyprus( Lanitis bros & Coca-Cola Cyprus), the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE through MEdIES), the Cyprus Pedagogic Institute (PIK) and other national stakeholders.
