Invited by the local Municipal Public Enterprise for Education & Development, on the island of Mykonos (KDEPPAM), MEdIES co-organised two activities for the students and the public on the 1st June 2018.
In the morning, from 9.00 to 11.00, 50 5th grade students with their teachers, from the 1st Primary School collected about 75 kg (17 bags) of trash, mostly plastic, in the beach of Platis Gialos. It should be noted that the clean-up was done in the touristic period, in a beach that gets frequently cleaned by the Municipality, therefore the amount of the collected items was a surprise to all of us. The students promised to come back and monitor the litter on the beach regularly.
In the afternoon, MEdIES officer, Mr Psallidas gave two presentations on current Challenges and Solutions relating to Water and Waste Management in islands. Apparently, during the last few years the island of Mykonos, due to its constant and increasing tourist flow is under strong environmental pressures all year round.
MEdIES would like to thank Mr Antonis Roumeliotis (KDEPPAM) and the Mykonos Municipality for their invitation and co-organisation, and the educators and students of the island for taking part in the clean-up. The clean-up has been recorded (by HELMEPA) as part of the Let's Clean Up Europe Campaign.
