The Regional Training on ESD / 1st Meeting of the Mediterranean Committee on ESD, 22-24 November 2017  was succesfully held under the organisation and the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus and the SWIM-H2020 SM Programme, and with the technical support and secretariat of the MEdIES/MIO-ECSDE and the scientific support of the UNESCO Chair on ESD in the Mediterranean (University of Athens). The meeting took place as a follow-up on the outcomes of the Ministerial Conference in Cyprus (December 2016) and thus, served a two-fold purpose: (a) To review and discuss how the Action Plan of the Mediterranean Strategy on ESD has been used/integrated/valued within the existing Programmes/Projects/Initiatives of the countries and the associated International and Regional organisations, one year after its adoption; (b) To provide the opportunity to exchange know-how and experiences on the latest developments on ESD and its role to achieve the SDGs by the countries.

60 representatives of Ministries of Education, Environment, Civil Society Organisations as well as of UNESCO Paris, UNESCO Office in Venice, UN Environment/MAP, UNECE, Secretariat of UfM and League of Arab States, participated in the meeting. 18 countries of the region were represented, namely: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Hergegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Malta, Mauritania, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia.

During the three days the participants discussed their experiences on ESD national plans and programmes and SDGs strategies. The meeting gave also the opportunity to the Mediterranean Committee on ESD to review how the Action Plan of the Mediterranean Strategy on ESD has been used, integrated, valued within these existing Programmes, Projects, Initiatives, focusing mainly at regional level (presentation made by Prof M Scoullos) and by the countries and the associated International and Regional organisations, one year after its adoption.

The participants voiced a high level (95%) of overall satisfaction. The delegates mostly valued the presentation of the state-of-the-art of ESD in the countries as well as the opportunities that were given for networking and cooperation. They also praised for the commitment and the work that has been done by the countries and regional/international organizations and  the support provided by the Ministry of Education of Cyprus and the technical support provided by MIO-ECSDE/MEdIES.

The meeting successfully ended  by identifying common areas of challenges in the application of ESD at national and regional level and proposing ideas for the way forward at the regional level, as regards the promotion and application of the AP/MSESD and its Committee. Additionally the representatives of the International Organisations reconfirmed their will to further support the process of promotion and application of the Mediterranean Strategy on ESD and its Action Plan.
