This was the 8th year for MEdIES to have collaborated with the Mission Water Environmental Programme and GWP-Med* to implement educational activities in schools. This year’s activities took place in two small islands of the Dodecanese, namely Nisyros and Tilos on 15/04/2016. Meanwhile, there has been a great participation of students and teachers in the wider area of Athens.

As in previous years, our educational intervention targets mainly primary and early high school students, aiming to inform and sensitize them on the issue of water saving, particularly through the revival of the traditional practice of rainwater harvesting in cisterns. Our approach is experiential and discovery-based. At the end of the intervention the educational poster “I care for water” is disseminated to students.

Nisyros and Tilos are tiny islands with small student population. In total, 96 students and 11 teachers have participated in the project activities.

We found out that in Nisyros practically every house was equipped with a cistern, that kept being in use until very recently. Teachers in their 40s or even 30s had vivid memories of the cistern, how it was made water proof, how it was filled, how it was cleaned, how it was sometimes broken by tree roots and repaired, etc. The young students also had a strong appreciation of the value of water, water is not a given in this tiny island and many families keep using their cisterns.

In the island of Tilos also, students showed a strong appreciation for water.

Besides the islands of Dodecanese, year a plethora of educational interventions for students and teachers were carried out in Athens in this school year, but also in other islands (Mykonos, Hydra, Poros, Aigina, Spetses). In total 2158 students have participated to the “Gift of Rain Activities” and 595 teachers have been trained in seminars. The activities in Athens are coordinated by Mr Vassilis Psallidas.

* The overall  Rainwater Harvesting Programme is lead by GWP-Med within tthe wider environmental programme Mission Water (APOSTOLH NERO) of the Coca Cola System in Greece.

All educational interventions are done in collaboration with the Departments of Environmental Education (EE) of Primary and Secondary Education of the Dodecanese and of Attica-Athens, respectively.
