Odour pollution is the second reason for citizens' complaints after noise, across Europe. It has adverse impacts on human health since frequent exposure can lead to headaches, stress and respiratory problems. It is an indicator of larger environmental issues such as poor waste management, polluted water, etc. Nevertheless, odour pollution is repeatedly ignored in environmental legislation with few studies conducted and scarce statistics available.

Along these lines, since April 208 MIO-ECSDE is partner in the EU funded D-NOSES project - Distributed Network for Odour Sensing, Empowerment and Sustainability (a Horizon 2020 specific programme with and for society SWafA).

Main scope of the Programme is the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in support of sustainability and governance, taking account of the international context. Its key objective is to find solutions for the odour pollution and introduce it in the policy agendas at a global scale in the medium to long term.

The programme will last three years (April 2018 - March 2021) engaging 14 Partners from: Spain, United kingdom, Germany, Greece, Austria, Italy, Portugal.

Key outcomes of the project is the research on and elaboration of pilot cases studies of local communities suffering fromt the problem, the development of innovative web applications and platforms to monitor and communicate odour pollution case studies in the partners' countries and beyond (open tools), and a series of Engangment plans and toolkits, Advocacy and outreach tools (plan, policy briefs, etc) as well as the development of tools and organisation of activities to raise awareness of the citizens, teachers and students at all levels.

Among the aforementioned activities MEdIES has undertaken to develop three MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) on odour pollution. The courses will be self-paced, free and accessible leading to a certificate of completion. They will targer three different audiences:

(a) the general public

(b) the educators

(c) the university students.

The MOOCs will be hosted in the e-learning platform of MIO-ECSDE and will be available in September 2019.

The objectives of the courses are, on one hand, to raise awareness on what the odour pollution issue is, what generates the problem (causes) and how our lives are affected (impact) and on the other, to be informed on what we can do as citizens about the problem, what are the related frameworks and the tools, and the ones developed by the DNOSES project to engage us on tracking, identifying, reporting, and communicating the problem to our local community and beyond.
