One day before, on July 4, the meeting of the Chairs and Co-Chairs of PNs was held. The developments of all Networks and their Flagship Projects were presented. B. Samothraki Summer University 2016, 9-22 July 2016

The Summer University of Samothraki on: “Integrated Management Approaches for Biosphere Reserves and other Designated Areas” took place between 9 and 22 July 2016 with the cooperation of a wide consortium of Research Institutions, Universities, and NGOs and with the kind support of the UNESCO Venice Office, GWP and the Municipality of Samothraki. It consisted of two parallel courses: (A) Aquatic and Social Ecology- Theory and Practice, and (B) Integrated Water and Coastal Management/Educational and Participatory Approaches, the latter coordinated by the UNESCO Chair on ESD in the Mediterranean/UoA and MIO-ECSDE.

In total, more than 70 post graduate students and young scientists from 21 European countries participated. The main aim was on one hand, to deepen the understanding of the value of Biosphere Reserves as "laboratories" and "catalysts" of Sustainable Development, and on the other, to highlight the rich natural and cultural diversity and heritage of the island of Samothraki and support its nomination to be included in the BR World Network (MAB/UNESCO). The detailed report is available at: http://www.medies.net/articles.asp?cID=8&aID=1080

C. Kick-off meeting of AFKAR III, Beirut, 20-21 September 2016

The kick off meeting of the Project “Civil Society in Action for Sustainable Development” was held on September 20th, at the premises of the Makhzoumi Foundation (Coordinator) in the presence of all partners: Armadilla, MIO-ECSDE, ALMEE and the associate Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO. This project is funded by the EU (managed by OMSAR within the AFKAR III Programme). It aims at fostering socio-economic sustainable development in the Bekka region of Lebanon, through raising public awareness, empowering people’s skills and enhancing energy efficiency solutions in the communities. MIO/MEdIES has undertaken the set up and implementation of a survey addressing students (15-18 yrs old) from 30 selected schools from the Bekka region, aiming to “capture” their perceptions on local current problems, issues about sustainable development, etc. To this end, on September 21st a meeting solely dedicated to the elaboration of the draft questionnaire prepared by MEdIES staff, took place. The material is addressed to students (11-14yrs old) & includes topics related to urban water management, NCWRs, responsible consumption, etc. The project is part of the wider programme “Water for the City” coordinated by the GWP-Med and supported by the Coca-Coca Foundation.

3. Other News

A. The UE4SD resources platform was launched: an ESD online platform for university educators

This new web toolkit created by the UE4SD project, the Online Platform (OP) for professional development in ESD, was launched. The OP presents the 26 best practices identified from across Europe, the UE4SD Academy residential training, an overview of the policies for ESD in Europe as well as useful readings and publications about the ESD and Higher Education.  MEdIES being one of the UE4SD partners contributed to the development of the OP providing ideas and related resources. The link for the platform is www.platform.ue4sd.eu

B. The new UNESCO GEM Report monitors progress towards the SDGs too!

The new Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report by UNESCO shows the potential for education to propel progress towards all SDGs, and calls for the need for education systems to scale attention to environmental concerns. Some indicative findings:

- While education is the best indicator of climate change awareness for most countries, half of countries’ curricula do not explicitly mention climate change or environmental sustainability in their content.

- In OECD countries, almost 40% of 15-year-old students only have basic knowledge about environmental issues.

-  Some 40% of the global population are taught in a language they don’t understand.

- Educating mothers to lower secondary education in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030 could prevent 3.5 million child deaths between 2050 - 2060.
