C. RWH educational activities widely implemented in schools of Athens and beyond!

During the 1st trimester of 2016 a bulk of school interventions within the “Rainwater Harvesting Project (RWH)” project have been carried out in schools of the wider Athens Metropolitan area, but also in Ydra, Spetses, Myconos and Aigion city. Furthermore, many teacher trainings have also been organized in cooperation with the Officers for Environmental Education. From January to March 2016 approximately 1,500 students and 370 educators have followed the school interventions and seminars, respectively. More interventions in schools are scheduled in April, while the project will also visit the schools of Tilos and Nisyros Islands.

The interventions in Athens are coordinated and run by Mr Vassilis Psallidas.

In the framework of the “Rainwater Harvesting Project” and on the occasion of the World Water Day (22/03) MEdIES was invited to carry out an awareness raising intervention for high-school students at the premises of the bottling unit in Aigio city. The programme for the 100 students that visited the Unit on that day (in rotating classes), included a series of hands on experiential activities about water (by MEdIES staff) and a guided tour (by the Factory staff). The overall event aimed to sensitize and inspire a responsible behavior about water. On behalf of MEdIES the programme was animated by MEdIES staff: Iro Alampei & Vicky Malotidi.

2. Material & ICTs

New poster on “Urban Water Cycle” for the MEdIES RWH school activities in Greece

A new poster on the “Urban Water Cycle” has been prepared by MEdIES (in Greek). The poster explores aspects of the natural water cycle and the human interventions on it at the city-level. It presents also an outline of the “non conventional water resources” together with tips for responsible water use (at house-level). This poster is an educational tool that is complementary to the educational material “The Gift of the Rain in the city” and is distributed to all students participating in the RWH activities. The poster (in PDF) is available here:

Prof. Scoullos, MEdIES Coordinator represented the Greek Ministry of Education in the 11th Meeting of the UNECE Steering Committee on ESD that was held in Geneva on February 15-16, 2016. The preparations for the UNECE High-level Meeting of Education and Environment Ministries (8-10 June 2016, Batumi) were discussed (including the High-level Segment on ESD). C. MIO-ECSDE is now an INGO Accountability Charter Member!

The Board of the INGO Accountability Charter unanimously approved MIO-ECSDE (the MEdIES Coordinator) as new Charter Member. The INGO Accountability Charter is a commitment of international NGOs to a high standard of transparency, accountability and effectiveness. The Charter provides the only global, fully comprehensive and cross-sectoral accountability framework for NGOs driven by NGOs.

D. ESD recognition in the new Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development

MEdIES/MIO-ECSDE’s continuous efforts in advancing ESD at the regional level had a distinguished outcome: during the recent Meeting of the Contracting Parties (COP19) of the Barcelona Convention (Athens, 9-12 February 2016) the “Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development” (MSSD) (2016-2025) was adopted and within it, the Mediterranean Strategy on ESD was accepted as its integral part. In addition, in the Ministerial “Athens Declaration”, the Mediterranean Strategy on ESD is strongly recognised: “Mindful of the Mediterranean Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development, resolve to enhance public awareness and the role of Education promoting sustainability and the implementation of the SDGs in the Mediterranean”.

During the COP more than 150 delegates from 21 Mediterranean countries and the EU renewed their commitment to enhance measures to reduce pressures on the marine and coastal environment.
