A. MEdIES training for Greek teachers on 'Know, Feel, Act! To Stop Marine Litter' 15 Oct 2015

About 40 educators from Athens –both primary and secondary level- joined the experiential seminar on the educational material “Know, Feel, Act! To Stop Marine Litter” (MARLISCO project) that took place on 15 October 2015, at the 7th Primary School of Palaio Faliro (Attica). The participants were handed out the material and following a presentation on the issue of marine litter, they engaged in experiential group work to discover themselves aspects of the issue, based on the teaching resource “Know Feel Act!” At the end of the seminar many of them declared they are about to run a school project with their students on the issue.

The seminar was co-organised with the respective ESD Departments of the Ministry of Education, together with MEdIES.

B. Greek Youth Messages for Sustainability - November 2015

For three days, in November 10, 11 and 12 2015, young people from Attica region, Greece, aged 15-17 years old, took part in an experiential event facilitated by the MEdIES Secretariat, in order for them to create their own sustainability messages. The goal of the three-day long event was to facilitate a discussion with youth groups from many schools of Attica region in order for the young students to generate and negotiate their own priorities and messages to effectively "green" their school and swift their school communities towards sustainability.

In total for the three days, more than 120 students and teachers took part in the event. The event that was hosted at the University of Athens was co-organized by MEdIES, UNESCO ASP-NET Schools, and the UNESCO Chair of the University of Athens.

C. ESD at the Regional Workshop for MPs, Media and Stakeholders, Athens, 6 Nov 2015

In the framework of the global developments in SD & ESD as well as the upcoming “Action Plan” of the “Mediterranean Strategy on ESD”, the session entitled “Investing in the future: the Role of Education” was held on November 6th within the Regional Workshop for MPs, Media and Stakeholders on Climate Adaptation in the Mediterranean Coastal Area that took place in Athens (Greece). The session was attended by 50 stakeholders, Members of the Parliaments, experts, and journalists. Prof. Michael Scoullos made an overview of the ESD international tools and strategies that are in currently in place, mainly the SDGs, the UNESCO GAP and the Mediterranean Strategy on ESD. Following that, an open discussion was held seeking participants’ contribution especially as regards the “Action Plan” that is expected to be finalized in 2016.

D. Closing event of the 'Lebanese Youth as Messengers for Sustainability' 27 Nov 2015, Beirut

The closing event of the project “Lebanese Youth as Messengers for Sustainability” took place on 27 November 2015 in Beirut in a warm ceremony attended by more than 120 participants. The project had run for two years as an initiative to foster a culture of sustainability among the Lebanese children and youth, their families and the local communities, within “AFKAR III Programme” funded by the EU and managed by OMSAR. Project leader was the Makhzoumi Foundation while partners were the NGOs Armadilla (Italy), ALMEE (Lebanon) and MIO-ECSDE (Greece). Ms Iro Alampei represented MIO-ECSDE at the closing ceremony.

E. Alter Aqua Teacher Trainings in Malta, 1 & 2 Dec 2015

This was the third time that the MEdIES Secretariat travelled to the Maltese islands to deliver a training to support the Maltese teachers in implementing the Alter Aqua Educational Material in their classes. The 35 educators of primary and kindergarten level who participated were provided with a vast range of resources and ideas on cross curricular activities and lesson plans which could be adapted for various age groups and across various subjects. Ms Iro Alampei and Ms Vicky Malotidi on behalf of MIO-ESDCE/MEdIES and Ms Marvic Refalo from NTM provided this training. On 1st December the training took place in Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park and Sustainable Development Centre, while on 2nd December it took place at the National Curriculum Centre. Meanwhile, within the Greece-based activities of the Alter Aqua project, Mr Vassilis Psallidas from the MEdIES secretariat starts in January the school interventions in Athens, that will target more than 1000 students for 2016. In spring another 500 students from selected islands of Dodecanese will benefit from the school experiential interventions.

 

 

 

2. Material & ICTs

Up-coming e-course on the material “Know, Feel, Act! To Stop Marine Litter”, spring 2016

The foreseen e-course is postponed to be held in spring 2016 (under the DeFish Gear Project this time). During the last two years in the 3 rounds of the e-course more than 300 individuals were trained on marine litter, as well as on ways and methods they can inform and sensitise others on the issue.

The main teaching resource of the e-course is the educational material: “Know, Feel, Act! To Stop Marine Litter” (online: www.marlisco.eu/education.en.html in English and 14 more languages) produced under the European MARLISCO project, will be the training content for yet another e-learning course for formal and non formal educators that will take place in spring 2016

A. MEdIES at the UE4SD Annual Meeting, Madrid, 23 November 2015

The Annual Meeting of the University Educators for Sustainable Development (UE4SD) was held in Madrid on 23 November 2015, followed by the COPERNICUS Alliance Conference on 24 November that focused on evaluation and assessment in higher education for sustainable development. Ms Vicky Malotidi from the MEdIES Secretariat participated in both events. The UE4SD meeting focused on presenting the key project outputs and outcomes, launching the publication of the “Mapping on Professional Development on ESD in Europe” and the “Leading Practice Publication” showcasing 13 best practice examples on professional development on ESD targeting to university staff. The Network of Mediterranean Universities on SD focusing on ESD (MedUnNET) was selected as one of the 13 best practices in this publication and furthermore, it was presented during a special session attracting many participants’ interest.

B. Upcoming meeting on the role of Universities in supporting designated sites as drivers for sustainability, 18-19 January 2016, Athens

The meeting will explore the role of universities in supporting UNESCO Designated Sites (Biosphere Reserves and World Heritage Sites) of the Euro-Mediterranean region, in promoting Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and sustainable practices within recent global and regional contexts and initiatives, including in particular the newly adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Goals (SDGs), the UN Climate Change Conference - COP 21 (Paris November 2015); the post-2014 (post-DESD) Global Action Plan (GAP) of UNESCO; the Mediterranean Strategy on ESD and its upcoming Action Plan; and the Education 2030 Framework for Action. The meeting will be attended by a number of selected academics and site managers from various countries.
